The Hudson Valley has a long and rich history, which most of my guests are already familiar with. Many are more interested in the gallery openings, concerts, theatre or craft festivals. Information on these can be found on Hudson Valley, Ulster County and New Paltz websites or on www.bearsystems.com.
You will find so many things to do in our area that you will want to stay for more than a weekend. |

New Paltz
The name was given by the early emigrants who arrived around 1675 from the Pfaltz region of today's Germany, and who were soon followed by the French Huguenots. Seven original Huguenot houses and a church are the pride of the Huguenot Historical Society, and are definitely worth seeing.
The other New Paltz "claim to fame" is the longstanding reputation of its educational institution, the State University of New York, known as the SUNY. New Paltz Classic Academy was established in 1828, and in 1942 it became the State Teachers College. In 1994 it received the status of State University of New York. Over 7,000 students are currently enrolled, and the campus is quite large, with over 260 acres. I particularly enjoy the exhibitions at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art and the shows at the Tudley Theatre. All shows and activities are listed on the SUNY New Paltz web site.

Mohonk Preserve
Hike, walk, or
climb a cliff – Mohonk Preserve is the best place to do it !!!
For the newcomers
to our area we should mention that one of the main local
attractions is the Mohonk Mountain House. It is nestled atop the
Scawangunk Mountains overlooking a lake. The natural beauty of
the setting captured the two Smiley brothers, who purchased this
large piece of land from John F. Stokes and in 1869 |

built by the lake a
10 room in. They were not only avid naturalists, but good
businessmen, and so soon the small inn was transformed into a
266 room Victorian Castle, which is the America’s oldest
family-owned resort. The property tax on the enormous acreage
necessitated however a creation of the Mohonk Preserve, a
non-profit sister organization of the Mohonk House
Mohonk Preserve
is on 6.500 acres, with well kept trails, and an enthusiastic
and helpful staff to greet you at their Visitor’s Center on
Rt.44/55. For further info. Please visit their site:

Minnewaska State Park
Minnewaska State
Park was established 1987. It is a “Carry Inn – Carry Out” park,
so bring your own food and water and take out your garbage – as
a matter of fact, this is the only thing I do not like about
this magnificent 18,000 acre wilderness – no bodega selling
espresso here ! The stroll around the lake is on a
comfortable carriage road, has gorgeous views, and takes about
1,5 hours in snail speed. If you are so inclined though, you are
welcomed to really ruin your body on some long tough hikes… |

The park is opened
7 days a week, winter hours are 9-5, and are much longer in the
summer. There are 2 parking lots on Rt.44/55 – and I would
strongly recommend making it a point to arrive on beautiful
Summer days by 10 am, so you will be able to park on the upper
parking lot by the lake…
